Winners: Bobby Hull, Ice Hockey
1965 - Feature Story
Bobby Hull, already timed as the National Hockey League’s fastest skater at 47.2 km/h, probably didn’t need any new weapon, but he had one for the 1964-1965 season. It was the curved stick blade. He now added an element of dip and dive to his fabled slap shot and despite missing nine games with a knee injury, he scored 39 goals, won the Hart Trophy as most valuable player and, “somewhat embarrassingly”, he always said, the Lady Byng Trophy as the league’s most gentlemanly player.
1966 - Feature Story
Bobby Hull would have yet another great National Hockey League season in 1965-1966. He would win the Hart Trophy as most valuable player and Art Ross Trophy as scoring leader. On March 12, 1966, Hull became the first NHL player to score more than 50 goals in a season. Rocket Richard, Bernie Geoffrion and Hull himself had previously scored 50 goals in a season, but number 51, against the New York Rangers, put Hull in a league by himself. He ended the campaign with 54 goals and 97 points. No left winger would again lead the league in points until Alexander Ovechkin 42 years later.
