Since the early 1930’s, male and female athletes in Canada have been recognized for their incredible contributions to their sport by the Canadian Press. In 1932, the Canadian Press Male Athlete of the Year was awarded for the first time and was followed in 1933, with the Canadian Press Female Athlete of the Year. In 1978, the names of the awards were changed to the Lionel Conacher Award and the Bobbie Rosenfeld Award, in tribute to the top Canadian male and female athletes of the first half of the 20th century.
