Winners: Bobby Orr, Ice Hockey
1970 - Feature Story
Number 4, Bobby Orr: Rare is it that a few words can prompt a smile, admiration and captivation. Yet in 1970, Bobby Orr was a household name, a National Hockey League phenomenon and national hero. In previous seasons he had already won a Calder Trophy as the National Hockey League’s top rookie and twice won the Norris Trophy as top defenceman. But he could also score goals with style, verve and propensity, unheard of in a blueliner. Defencemen were supposed to defend, not score! Yet Orr did that, and so much more during the 1969-1970 season as he became the first defenceman to win the NHL scoring title (33 goals and 87 assists). He also led the Boston Bruins to the Stanley Cup final against the St. Louis Blues, where Orr ended his outstanding season in spectacular fashion. In overtime of game four, with Boston leading the series 3-0, he scored the winning goal as photos captured him flying in the air like Superman – an iconic moment in Canadian sport.
