Winners: Elvis Stojko, Figure Skating
1994 - Feature Story
Quad King. Quad God. Sportswriters had a field day trumpeting Elvis Stojko’s athleticism. In 1991, he became the first skater to land a quadruple toe-double toe loop jump in competition, quickly rising in the world’s top ranks. He finished third at the 1992 World Figure Skating Championships in Oakland, California and then in second a year later behind compatriot Kurt Browning. In early 1994, 21-year-old Stojko defeated four-time world champion Browning at the Canadian Figure Skating Championships in Edmonton, arriving at the 1994 Olympic Winter Games in Lillehammer, Norway as a major contender for Olympic Gold. A martial arts expert, Stojko unleashed an outstanding kung-fu-styled free skating program that delighted onlookers but drew lukewarm presentation marks from judges, and he wound up with the Silver medal. Weeks later, at the World Figure Skating Championships in Chiba, Japan, Stojko skated the same program and struck Gold, earning a perfect 6 from one judge to win his first world title.
