Winners: Joe (King) Krol, Football
1946 - Feature Story
Joe (King) Krol left his mark on the 1946 Canadian football season. After he won the league scoring title, his Toronto Argonauts won the Grey Cup, as he threw three touchdown passes and caught a fourth in a 28-6 victory over Winnipeg. Then Krol turned to basketball and nearly won a roster spot with the Toronto Huskies in 1946, their only season in the Basketball Association of America that was the forerunner of the National Basketball Association. The best football player in the country was the Huskies’ final cut.
1947 - Feature Story
It was more of the same for Joe Krol in 1947. The Toronto Argonauts became the last All-Canadian team to win the Grey Cup, edging Winnipeg, 10-9. Krol would kick four singles and throw a touchdown pass to Royal Copeland, his partner in the Toronto backfield. The tandem was nicknamed the “Gold Dust Twins”. In a league that would soon come to be dominated by imports, Krol scored 19 of the Argos’ 24 points in the two-game, total-point East Final, as Toronto defeated the Ottawa Rough Riders 24-0.
