Winners: Ada Mackenzie, Golf
1933 - Feature Story
The wonder is how Ada Mackenzie ever had the time to be so good on the golf course, particularly in 1933. She took the Ontario Ladies Amateur Championship at her former club, Mississauga, and then added both the Canadian Open and Canadian Closed Ladies Amateur titles. She did all this while still running the Toronto Ladies Golf Club, the women-only club she founded and opened in 1926, primarily because she believed women should be allowed weekend morning tee times, always set aside for male members, and no other club would feature such a consideration. Mackenzie also ran her own clothing company and store, which designed, manufactured and sold women’s clothing for athletes. As if all that weren’t enough, she still held down a full-time job in a bank. Yet she remained practically unbeatable on the golf course.
