Winners: Sandra Post, Golf
1979 - Feature Story
The Dinah Shore, the first women’s tournament ever to feature a $100,000 purse, didn’t yet carry major championship status in 1979. That would come later, but in 1979 it surely was one of the season’s gem events and once again Sandra Post acted accordingly. On the 12th hole, Post drew even with the great Nancy Lopez with a 35 foot chip shot, and would later take the lead. She thus defended the championship she had won in 1978 by posting a record 12-under-par total, improving the tournament scoring record by seven shots. She won two more LPGA tournaments in 1979 and finished second on the tour’s money list.
1980 - Feature Story
Sandra Post, who was the first Canadian to join the Ladies Professional Golf Association tour, kept on winning in 1980, taking the West Virginia Classic at the Speidel Golf Club in Wheeling, West Virginia, on a sweltering August weekend. On the third hole of a sudden-death playoff, Post defeated Donna Caponi, the woman who had earlier that season ended Post’s two-year winning run in the Dinah Shore. For the season, despite some nagging injuries, Post finished in the top 10 on the LPGA tour’s money list.
